Purgatory

from Naturally Preserved by Uncle Sammy

/

about

This is a song that is about a night club. People with dead end lives hang out there. Actually, people who have dead end lives that have died hang out there. The grille is not in heaven, hell or earth, but between earth and hell, it's a little closer to hell than earth. It's a friendly place. If you go to Thortens Back Bay Bar and Grille on Peterborough Street in Boston you will get an idea of how this place looks. Purgatory bar and grill has more of a sulfury smell, and they serve more Bloody Mary's, and not as many Long Island ice teas. Beau likes instrumental bridges leading into choruses (like Green Earrings or Black Cow by Steely Dan). During the keyboard solo all kinds of happy little demonic cherub style creatures fly about the room in a drunken dance. Then during the drum solo they all kill each other, as our hero stares into his beer, thinking.

lyrics

VERSE ONE
I think today that I'll start to finalize.
I'll hitch a ride up from the land of exile.
Riding shotgun straight up to cloud number nine.
In the drivers seat is beauty certified.

With my demons I've become a helping friend.
Friendly angels that stay with me 'till the end.
I'll put my spirit in a letter that I'll send.
Up to heaven, when it gets there don't know when.

CHORUS
And I'll be hanging down at purgatory,
bar and friendly grill.
There's a two for one special,
on the floor the blood will spill.

If you show up with me early
there's a story I can tell
In the glass the drinks will flow,
bottoms up and get your fill,
Bottoms up and get your fill.

VERSE TWO
All mistakes I've made I carry in a sack.
Heavy load, has been breaking my poor back.
There is no virtue in my life I didn't lack.
It's too late now to pick up all the slack.

I'm comfortable in my land that never sleeps.
I watch the devil close up shop and start to sweep.
I realize now that there's a promise I should keep.
But tonight I may just get a little sleep.

CHORUS
And I'll be hanging down at purgatory,
bar and friendly grill.
There's a two for one special,
on the floor the blood will spill.

If you show up with me early
there's a story I can tell
In the glass the drinks will flow,
bottoms up and get your fill,
Bottoms up and get your fill.
